=BASICS

In HYPER//ECHO, you play as this = hooded traveller.

Since this is an online space, you might see other people playing too.

To experience the work, all you need to do is explore and see what other players have left behind. You may choose to leave behind a building or a message yourself, or simply be an observer.

There are no expectations — it is a virtual space where everyone is anonymous.

By tapping the screen, your = character will walk to where you tap.

You can zoom in/out the camera by pinching the screen, or by scrolling.

The buttons on the bottom of the screen do the following:

  • E — Teleport you back to the start area (useful if you get lost)
  • C — Enter BUILDING MODE, to place a building
  • B — Enter MESSAGE MODE, to leave a message

The buttons on the top-left of the screen do the following:

  • & — Show the SOUND SETTINGS menu.
  • 0 — Create a URL to your current location
  • @ — Show the HELP menu
OREPAIRING

Some structures may appear damaged. You are encouraged to repair them.

Select the building by tapping on it (try tapping near the bottom). This brings up a Repair Menu.

Tap O to repair the building.

v
If a structure is left abandoned for too long (after many days), it can no longer be repaired.

To view a message, you must be standing on top of the slab where it is placed.

As messages decay, the writing becomes obscured and it becomes harder to make out the symbols.

When viewing messages, the Repair Menu is handily embedded underneath the message when viewing it.

Like buildings, tap O to repair the message.

zBUILDING

By entering C BUILDING MODE, you can choose a location to place a new building.

If a building cannot be placed, the location is either too far from your =character, or is restricted.

You have 8 choices of building to choose from. The dots represent the building's cost to your Energy meter. Some buildings, such as bridges, cannot be placed on land — these icons are disabled.

Below this is your z Energy meter, which shows how much you have left to spend.

v
The z Energy meter slowly builds over time, and cannot be influenced to increase faster. Walk around while you wait for it to recharge.

Tapping one of the building icons will let you preview the building before placing it.

To place the building in the world, press ) to confirm.

BMESSAGING

By entering B MESSAGE MODE, you can choose a location to place a new message, just like C BUILDING MODE.

Choosing a location brings up a keyboard interface where you can write your message.

Evidently, there is no text in HYPER//ECHO. Players can only communicate through a custom set of "emoji" symbols. See how creative you can be in your messages with this limitation!

To place the message in the world, press ) to confirm.

v
Like buildings, messages cost z Energy to place.
0SHARING

By pressing the 0 button, you can share your current location with other people outside of the virtual experience. This creates a custom URL that is automatically copied to your device's clipboard, like this:

https://hyperecho.acmi.net.au/?location=A4ADgFf8NBTq

You can paste this URL wherever you like — in a message to a friend, or on social media.

;
Players also use this mechanic to bookmark locations they'd like to return to later.
@FAQ

Can I talk to other players?

Only indirectly. You could try placing a message on the ground to get their attention.

What do the messages mean?

Messages are all left by real players — they could be well-crafted poems, or they might not mean anything at all.

Can I delete or undo a building?

Unfortunately, you cannot do this.
